Looking to give your concrete floors a fresh and stylish upgrade? Stained concrete floors are a fantastic way to creatively transform your space. Not only are they durable and easy to maintain, but with the right stain and care, they can last for years while standing up to daily wear and tear.

We’re here to guide you through five simple steps to get those floors looking stunning. Whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or just want to add some flair to your home, this guide will make the process simple and enjoyable.

Let's get started and make your floors shine like new!

Transform Your Space: 5 Easy Steps for a Stained Concrete Floor

1. Get Your Concrete Ready for Staining

Before you start, ensure your concrete floor is spotless. Eliminate any oil stains or debris that could prevent the stain from sticking well to the concrete. This helps avoid an uneven, patchy finish. If you're familiar with using a floor buffer and angle grinder, you’re all set for this step.

You can rent a floor sander and fit it with a diamond pad for the main area. These single-pad machines are easy to find and use. For the edges, grab an angle grinder with a diamond grinder attachment. We recommend wet grinding to minimize dust, but if that's not an option, a HEPA filter and safety glasses will keep your lungs and eyes protected.

2. Clean Up and Repair for the Best Results

Now that your concrete is smooth and free of old coatings, it's time to repair any cracks before moving on. If you spot cracks in your concrete, repair them with Concrete Sealant to ensure a flawless finish when you stain. Next, it's time to deal with the dirt and dust. Give it a good vacuum or wash it with a mild detergent to remove dirt and dust.

After that, grab a mop and apply a concrete cleaning solution across the whole surface. You can also use a soft brush to spread it evenly. Once that's done, let it dry completely. This step is super important to make sure your stain looks its best, so take your time and enjoy the process!

3. Create Your Design with Masking

Now it’s time to mask off any areas you don’t want to stain, like baseboards, thresholds, walls, or floor fixtures. This is your chance to get creative! Use packing tape or drape to create the design you want. If you're going for a multi-color pattern, start with one color first, then mask again for the next color.

4. Apply Your Stain

It's time to add some vibrant color to your concrete floors! Use a sprayer to apply the stain in two or three coats, creating a rich and consistent finish. With a wide array of shades available, you can easily mix and match to achieve your design goals, whether you’re going for a bold statement or a subtle, elegant look.

If you don’t have a sprayer, don’t worry! A paintbrush and roller are excellent alternatives. The roller efficiently covers large areas, while the brush allows you to handle corners and edges with precision. This method might take a bit longer, but it requires less preparation to protect against overspray, making it a convenient option for smaller projects.

As you work, ensure each coat is completely dry before applying the next. This not only enhances the durability of the finish but also ensures even color distribution.

5. Seal the Color

For the final step, once your concrete floor is beautifully stained, it's time to lock in that color with a sealer! Applying a concrete sealer is important for protecting your floor and giving it a sleek finish. Most people use a sprayer along with microfiber pads to achieve an ultra-smooth and glossy look.

You'll want to apply two coats of sealer, letting it dry for less than four hours between coats. After you're done, be patient and wait three to four days before you start walking on it or moving furniture back in.
